My Mission Statement & General Information
Our
school's philosophy centers on the idea that all students can learn, and that our job as teachers is to create an environment
that provides students with the tools they need to succeed. We believe that all students should be educated in the regular
classroom setting unless their academic, behavioral, or emotional needs would prevent them from being successful in this placement.
At Western Hills we call this an inclusion program and all of our students are included in the regular education class for
at least part of their day. The remainder of their day is spent in a self-contained program that meets their special needs.
The
Self-Contained program services less than 2% of our students with special needs. They are provided with specialized methods
and programs designed to meet the needs of the students Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
All
academic classes: English, Science, Math, and Social Studies; are available in the Self-Contained program. These classes follow
the curriculum of the regular education classes and address the standards. Adaptations and slight differences occur for each
student depending on their needs as determined in the goals and objectives in their IEP's.
Aside
from the core curriculum classes (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) all self-contained students are included throughout
the rest of the days scheduling including homeroom, lunch, SRA corrective reading program, study skills program, Unified Arts
classes (Physical Education, Health, Art, Music, Family and Consumer Science, World Languages, and Technology Education),
field trips, assemblies, athletics, school activities and general school functions.
